Food Security Issue in Singapore
The panic buying caused by the pandemic has brought the issue of food supply crisis to public attention. In land-scarce Singapore, the development of urban farming became an urgent priority.
Urban Farmer - James Lam Singapore is different from other countries, as our land is very limited. My job is to find a way to grow vegetables without using the soil. A small system like this can grow up to 48 leafy vegetable seeds. You can place it at the window or the corridor.
The leafy vegetables and food stuffed inside the fridge are all marked with details of their food origin, most of them come from neighbouring countries.
The options and variety of produce grown locally are very limited.
Singapore Farmer - Chiam Yiak Joo What we need are people who want to become farmers and are committed to farming. From farm to dining table, the good thing is, you get to see (the whole process of growing the vegetables) You can eat what you grow with a peace of mind.
When the concept of urban farming becomes a movement consumers can turn into producers. Besides relieving the issue of food security, it can also reduce the carbon footprint in food production which is damaging to the environment.
