Opportunities and challenges in local recycling efforts
Blue recycling bins are easily seen around HDB flat area. These bins clearly indicate what can be put inside. However, there are still up to 40% of the disposed items in the recycling bins that are not suitable for recycling. We need to regularly keep our environment and our belongings clean. Likewise, these recyclables need to be kept clean in order to maintain the quality and value of these recyclables. Hence, Tzu Chi Singapore and SembWaste have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work more closely in improving the recycling rate in Singapore through various environmental awareness events.

To reduce the rate of contamination of the recyclables, SembWaste, which is responsible for handling recyclables in three zones in Singapore is actively promoting its ezi app to encourage the public to recycle.

It's best to engage the public in a digital mode. So the public at their own convenience, can easily log on to the ezi App and understand what they can recycle from their household. And alongside we also provide the convenience of telling them where and how to recycle. And this is where the partnership with Tzu Chi (Singapore) is useful, (because) you can share what you are doing, (for public) to see that, look, the public can bring these types of recyclables to your site and we can be there to help them recycle better.
In March this year, Tzu Chi Singapore signed an MOU with SembWaste, a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries Ltd. to work closer in promoting recycling at various environmental awareness events, to work towards improving the recycling rate in Singapore.
